How to Become an Instructor

With approval of employing agency, student may attend the 40 hour General Instructor Development class. After successfully completing the General Instructor Development course and the required Instructor Apprenticeship, student may instruct at the Academy in a variety of topics, as approved by Academy Staff.

How to Complete an Instructor Apprenticeship

Students are not considered valid Instructors until they have completed their Apprenticeship requirement after successfully completing the General Instructor Development course. Students have 12 months from the completion of their General Instructor Development course to meet this requirement.

Apprenticeship time varies depending on your intended Instructor status.

For General Instructor, the Apprenticeship requirement is 4 hours of classroom instruction in Basic Law, Basic Jail, Basic Emergency Communications, Basic Animal Control, or any of our In-Service classes.

The Academy also offers an Apprenticeship Completion Program that is 2 hours of classroom setting, however the student must choose a topic from a predetermined list, that includes pre-written objectives. The student must write a lesson plan based on the topics and objectives provided, that is a minimum of 2 hours / maximum of 2.5 hours in duration. Please see your Training Coordinator for additional details to meet the requirements of this program. All Training Coordinators contact Renee Meador to schedule students for this particular program.

For "Specialty Instructors" ( Firearms, Driving, Defensive Tactics, and Radar Instructors) -  the Apprencticeship hours are extended from 4 hours of classroom time to 4 hours of classroom plus 4 hours of practical instruction. The DCJS requirement is:

Firearms: 4 hours classroom / 4 hours Range

Driving: 4 hours classroom / 4 hours Track

The ACADEMY has elevated those exceptions to include Defensive Tactics and Radar Instructor to the same standard, requiring the additional 4 hours of practical application as well, to provide consistency in Instructor Apprenticeships.

Instructor Notes:

Instructors are allowed access to the Academy for set up starting at 07:15. Students are restricted and are allowed access starting at 07:30 am.

Instructors are allowed covered drinks in the classroom, however the "no food" rule applies to Instructors as well.

We ask that all Instructors bring their presentations on a separate electronic storage media, not their personal or agency laptops. Due to the encryption on the various CD manufacturers, we find that a substantial number of CDs do not function properly with our AV systems. The preferred media is jump / thumb / pin drives, or a larger external storage device such as a PASSPORT.  Laptops may be brought as a back-up only for presentations, but not for primary presentation usage. Instructors are asked NOT to tamper or alter any of the Academy computer settings, wiring, etc. Please contact Academy Staff if you have any AV issues.

Instructors are requested to make sure that all presentations are saved and presented in Microsoft 2003 or earlier versions, not Vista or the accompanying Microsoft 7 formats. In anticipation of more VISTA complications when it was released, the Academy did not upgrade to that operating system, and therefore has difficulties reading materials saved or presented in that format. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, however we want your presentations to display at optimum quality on the current XP operating system.

Releasing Students from class:

Please do not release students early from their scheduled time without prior approval of the class Supervisor.  This helps eliminate any questions about credit hours awarded.

Dress Code:

Instructors are requested to observe the same Dress Code standards as the students. Please remove your hats in the building, and dispose of any tobacco products prior to class time.

Accident Reports:

Please make sure that you submit an Academy accident report for any students who are injured, regardless of severity. The Academy requires documentation that medical aid was offered, then accepted or refused by the student, as well as agency notifications. If forms have not been provided, please check with the Academy Training Supervisor for your class.
